Fringe 1 for Shawl

  1. Cut pieces of yarn about 12” – 14” long. I use a magazine about 6” – 7” wide, wrapping the yarn around and around, then cutting all the yarn at one edge of the magazine.
  2. NOTE: for a triangular shawl, add fringe only on the two short sides.
  3. Take 3 strands of yarn. Double it over, then, using a crochet hook, pull the center fold in the yarn through the outer edge of an eyelet in the edge of the shawl. Pull the yarn ends through the loop and tug it gently to secure it.
  4. Repeat for each of the other eyelets on the two sides of the shawl. NOW you have six-strand x 6” - 7” long hanks all around two edges of the shawl, like this:
  5. Starting at one end of the fringe, take 3 strands from the first hank and 3 from the second hank. Tie them in a simple overhand knot about 1” from the edge of the shawl.
  6. Take the remaining 3 strands from the second hank and 3 from the third hank and tie them likewise.
  7. Repeat all the way around the two edges of the shawl. NOW you have your first row of fringe, like this:
  8. Repeat steps 4 and 5 to make a second row, like this:
  9. Comb the ends with your fingers to lay the strands smooth, then trim the ends straight across. YOU’RE DONE!
