Mini Felted Cell Phone Purse

An original by Jan Friend of Naturally Fuzzy Yarns

An excellent project for beginning knitters, but attractive and useful for us all!

Requirements:

** This is a beginner knitting pattern. However, for further reference information, I recommend Interweave Press's The Knitter's Companion, expanded and updated, by Vicki Square.

Knitting your purse:

    Knit the bag section.
  1. Cast on 20 stitches (STs) loosely, using the backward loop or E cast-on.
  2. Place a marker.
  3. Knit 48 rows.
  4. Hold first 5 STs on a stitch holder.
  5. Knit 10 STs.
  6. Hold the last 5 STs on another stitch holder.
  7. Start the button tab.
  8. On the center 10 STs (the ones not being held in #4 and #6 above), knit 8 rows.
  9. Make the buttonhole.
  10. Knit 4 STs. Bind off 2 STs. Knit 4 STs.
  11. Knit 4 STs. Cast on 2 STs, again using the backward loop or E cast-on. Knit 4 STs.
  12. Decrease the button tab.
  13. Knit 2 STs TOG (together). Knit to the last 2 STs at the end of the row. SSK (slip-slip-knit). 8 STs remain.
  14. Knit the next row.
  15. Knit 2 STs TOG (together). Knit to the last 2 STs at the end of the row. SSK. 6 STs remain.
  16. Knit the next row.
  17. Knit 2 STs TOG (together). Knit to the last 2 STs at the end of the row. SSK. 4 STs remain.
  18. Knit the next row.
  19. Bind off the last 4 STs. Weave in the end.
  20. Make the handle.
  21. Place the 5 STs on holder from row 4 onto your needle. Begin yarn and knit first 5 STs.
  22. Knit until you have 84 rows.
  23. Ketner-stitch the 84th row to the last 5 STs (on holder from row 6).
  24. Complete your purse.
  25. Fold the purse in half. Using invisible weaving garter stitch, sew up the two side seams and across the fronts of the handle.
  26. Turn the purse to the wrong side (inside out) and work a single whip stitch over the seam allowance to secure the seams. Turn the purse back to the right side.
  27. Fold the button tab down to the front of the purse. Insert your pinkie through the buttonhole to mark the button location. Sew the button on the front of the purse.

Felting your purse:

Wash in very hot water, separate except for other items of the same yarn. Note: you may have to wash twice to get the size you want for your cell phone.

Taking care of your purse:

Always hand-wash in cold water.
